When you have your neck surgery, you will most likely have cervicoplasty (to remove excess skin) or platysmaplasty (to remove or change neck muscles). Rather than invasive surgery, your surgeon might simply use liposuction to remove fatty deposits or even give you Botox injections to improve the elasticity of your skin.
If you elect to have full plastic surgery done on your neck, you can expect the procedure to last about three hours. If you are also having procedures done elsewhere on your body, the surgery might last much longer. Before surgery, make sure that you have discussed everything with your doctor and that he or she understands just exactly what your expectations are.
For weakened neck muscles, your surgeon is likely to perform platysmaplasty surgery. As this procedure is done, your surgeon will make small incisions under your chin and behind your ears. Once this is done, your surgeon will manipulate your neck muscles as needed. If you are having a cervicoplastic procedure done to remove excess skin, your surgeon will make incisions in your chin and behind your ears, trimming the skin and putting it into place as he moves along. The trimmed skin will be held in place via stitches or tissue adhesive.
Your surgeon will decide before your neck plastic surgery just what kind of anesthesia you will need. General anesthesia puts you out completely and you will not be at all aware of what is going on. Some surgeons suggest using a local anesthesia with a mild sedative that keeps you somewhat alert and awake during the surgery. Only you and your surgeon can decide which type of anesthetic is appropriate for you.
