As we get older our bodies age differently. Some people age poorly and some people age hardly at all. Some people die when they are 80 and they still look like they did when they were 50 while others die when they are 60 and they look like they’re 90. Why do people look so differently as they age? The answer is easier than you may think and it’s what I would like to talk about in this article today.
Depending on how old you are there may be different things that are causing you to look older than you actually are. Scientist believe that our bodies age because of things called free radicals which we get by the foods we eat. Meats as well as fast foods and processed foods are high in things that promote free radicals. You can fight free radicals by eating foods that are high in antioxidants. It’s no surprise that these types of foods generally tend to be fruits and vegetables and whole grains and things of this nature.
So the first thing you can do to stop old agent in its tracks is to decrease the amount of free radical producing foods such as meats and processed foods that you eat and increase the amount of antioxidant containing foods such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains. That’s not really rocket science, you knew that already you just chose to ignore it, am I right?
More importantly, especially for people who are over the age of 60 is exercise. As we grow older our bodies naturally lose muscle mass; that is to say, our muscles slowly erode away. This more than anything else leads to a look of old age in senior citizens. Not only does it make you look old, it can have serious medical effects on you because the more muscle you lose the easier it is for you to catch different diseases and conditions.
Unfortunately the only way to build back muscle mass is through weight training and that means getting into a gym and pumping some iron. As an older senior citizen this may not be something you want to do but it can be vitally important. Don’t engage in any weight training exercise without the help of trained professionals. Most gyms come with physical therapists and physical trainers who are licensed and trained to help teach you how to engage in weight training correctly and safely. You will start out very small, using very little weight and slowly build up over time.
Get in the habit right now of exercising with weights at a gym under supervision at least three times a day for half an hour a day. Rebuilding muscle mass can be the most important part of stopping old age and reversing the signs of aging but it won’t work unless you do it, and that takes discipline and hard work. But if you put in the time I promise you will be amazed by the results.
