Persons with hearing loss may speak louder or softer than those around him. He may not even know that he is speaking loudly. Hearing loss not only affects how a person hears the voices of those around him, it can also affect how he hears his own voice. Persons aware of their hearing loss may over compensate and speak very quietly without even realizing what is happening.
If you notice that every time someone else enters the room they turn the volume down on the radio or television, this could be a sign of hearing loss. It is very easy to turn the volume up to compensate for your hearing loss.
People with hearing loss may have difficulty on hearing on the telephone. Some will actually stop using the telephone, without realizing that hearing loss is the problem. Fortunately, today most phones have built in volume controls that allow the user to turn up the volume in order to better hear the conversation. Another person may pick up your phone and make a comment about the volume as a sign of your hearing loss. Cell phones pose a totally different problem, as many of the ring tones simply blend into the background noise for persons with hearing loss. Many people with hearing loss have difficulty hearing conversations on cell phones, even when the volume is turned to high.
If your hearing loss took place at an early age, you may have learned to compensate through reading of lips. In fact, many persons may not even know that they have a hearing loss until a change in visual ability makes it difficult for them to “hear.” A person who reads lips will position himself or herself in such a way that they are directly facing the other person in the conversation. Persons with facial hair make lip reading difficult for some persons who read lips.
Persons with hearing loss may find themselves dominating a conversation. By dominating the conversation, they are no longer expected to answer questions that they did not hear.

As you subconscious brain tries to fill in the gaps that you did not hear, you may agree to something without realizing it.
