More than 2,000 people who had Parkinson’s were considered for the research and it was found that at least 1 percent of them had melanoma. Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease and worsens with time. It is progressive in nature. People with this disorder actually will need to receive a skin test regularly to identify the chances of developing melanoma.
Many studies have found that the risk of developing melanoma is higher in people suffering from Parkinson’s, a disease which develops when brain cells that are responsible for the production of dopamine start dying. However, scientists have not be able to decipher whether the risk of developing melanoma is due to the medication the patients take for treating Parkinson’s or on account of the disease itself.
Thirty-one different medical facilities conducted a test on more than 2,000 Parkinson’s patients and their skin samples were taken. Everything from irregular growth and moles on the skin were sent for biopsies. The research found that at least 20 cases had melanoma which was isolated in nature. Another fact that was considered was living in the US increases the likelihood of developing a skin condition like melanoma.
The same statistics was compared with the research conducted by the American Academy of Dermatologists and the result was the same — Parkinson’s patients had a higher risk of developing melanoma.
