Suggestion:
At 65, your friend is also presbyopic to a +2.75 or + 3.00 , so that reduces the – 6.75 by almost half when focusing up close.
Anyone in their mid forties and up who are nearsighted can read up close without glasses. The presbyopia cancels out a large part of the – power up close.
That is unless they also have a lot of astigmatism , in which case they must have bifocals to see up close.
Those who are nearsighted without too much astigmatism normally wear bifocals after the age of 40 anyway , which just reduces the reading portion to almost 0 many times, which is like taking the glasses off, but more convenient.
