Parents of 19-21 Month Olds – Running?
Our little girl is 20 months. She started to walk at 11 months 2 weeks, which was fine for about a month or 2. At around 13 months, she took to trying to run, obviously with consequences. My partner said I should just let her run, as I was always telling her to slow down, and putting reigns on her. The minute I took the reigns off, she would run so fast, she couldn't stop herself. I even think I have hindered her a little, by not letting her walk without reigns on hard surfaces with enough space to start a run, but I cant. Even just the other day, she went flying in the super market. She is so fast off the mark, it can happen without warning, and she goes flying. Now at 20 months, I still cannot let go of her reigns. Anywhere, the super market, bedroom to bedroom, she is like lightening, and my heart is in my mouth. Nothing I can do will slow her down. Its not getting better, because as her balance becomes better, she tries to run even faster.
Note : -Looking back at cine film of me the same age, I was quite a fat 18 month old, and walked quite slowly and safely when filmed on my parents pathway. Does anyone else have their baby that tries to run too fast for her own safety?
Suggestion:
I can't believe people are "saddened" that you used a baby "leash." Like a stroller or cart is any better, they are all a restraint! You gotta do what you gotta do to keep your baby safe.
At this age, i would teach her to hold your hand and walk with you now. I have nothing against reigns but at some point they have to learn to hold mommy's hand and walk nice. Save the reigns for bigger crouds or outside when she might run into the street.

My 18 month old runs like crazy. And I let him. Whether its in the house or outside, I let him run but tell him to be careful. Sure he falls, and cries sometimes. But hes up and at it again in 10 seconds. Hes a little boy, hes supposed to run and be rowdy. If the worst thing that can happen is that he falls down on and gets a skinned knee, so be it. Thats what kids do.
My daughter is 19 months. She didn't start walking till 14.5 months but has been running for several months now. We let her run. She has fallen and skinned her knee, but that's just part of life as a toddler. You just have to let kids be kids sometimes.
reigns lol. She won't learn until she practices. When my kids run on concrete I always tell them no no no running but sometimes they do and sometimes they get skinned knees but that's what happens. There fine and they get more stable.
If you mean "reigns" like a baby leash, I'm saddened. You put your kid an a cart at the super market and a stroller at the mall. When at home, let her run. She'll fall, yes, but maybe a few scraped knees will teach her not to run til she falls over. Why don't you take her to a soccer field or something where she can run all she wants? The grass will cushion any falls and the worst that will happen is there will be a lot of grass and dirt stains on her clothing. But it will get all that extra energy out, kinda like a dog.
