Reasons for Breast Reduction

Women with gigantomastia, or have genetically big and heavy breasts are prime candidates for breast reduction surgery. The weight of their breasts may cause chronic strain in the head, neck, back, and shoulders. Also, heavy breasts may cut off the flow of air and blood because of the weight.

Heavy breasts can also be the source of irritation when brassiere straps bite into or rub the skin raw. Insurance usually covers this surgery if for those reasons.

Some women may feel put off about their breasts if they seem too big for them and do not complement their slight frames. In these cases, the surgery is cosmetic in nature.

Except in rare cases, breast reduction is only recommended for adults who have already developed their breasts completely. If a patient breastfeeds or has plans to breastfeed, reduction surgery may not be advisable.

Males afflicted with gynecomastia may feel awkward and humiliated by their condition, usually occurring in their teenage years. They may get the surgery for their self-esteem

The technique used may vary, depending on whether the breasts are made of fatty tissues or mammary glands. If glandular tissue is widespread across the chest, this will affect what surgery will be performed.
